Did you know that the iconic storytelling, world-class service, and magic of Disney can be found tucked away on the serene shores of Oahu, Hawaii?

If Hawaii has always been on your bucket list, here is some magical news: Disney’s Aulani Resort & Spa in Ko Olina brings the Disney experience to life with a deep, authentic celebration of Hawaiian culture.

For many Canadian families, Hawaii feels like a dream destination that might be out of reach, too expensive, or logistically complex. Having traveled to Aulani across different life stages, first with an 11-month-old infant, on multi-generational family trips, and later navigating the resort with my legally blind daughter, I can tell you firsthand that Aulani is far more than a hotel. It is a fully immersive destination where families of all ages can have a magical experience.

Here is everything Canadian travelers need to know to plan a seamless, memorable escape to Disney’s Aulani Resort.

Getting to Oahu from Canada: Simple Connections & Seamless Travel

For Canadian travelers, getting to Oahu (HNL) is straightforward, especially when connecting through Vancouver International Airport (YVR):

  • West Coast Travelers: Direct flights from Vancouver to Honolulu take about 6 hours or more, depending on the flight, making it an easy trip for young families.
  • East Coast & Central Travelers: Connecting through Vancouver acts as the ideal midpoint break.
  • The YVR Connection Advantage: Clearing U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Preclearance directly inside Vancouver Airport means you land in Honolulu as a domestic passenger. Grab your bags and walk straight out into the Hawaiian breeze without standing in long customs lines after a transpacific flight.
  • Family Amenities at YVR: Take advantage of Vancouver’s play areas, spacious restrooms, and quiet seating zones to stretch little legs before the second leg of your flight. My kids always love the play areas and grabbing some Tim Horton’s before the next leg of our flight from Montreal.

Arriving in Ko Olina: Transfers & Car Rentals

Disney’s Aulani is located in Ko Olina, about a 30-minute drive west of Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL), depending on traffic.

Honolulu Airport (HNL) to Ko Olina Resort Area (Aulani): about 30 minutes by car, depending on traffic.

Navigating Airport Transfers vs. Renting a Car

  • Pre-Arranged Transfers: If you plan to spend your time relaxing on-site, pre-booked shuttles (such as Hele Hele Transportation or private town cars) offer a stress-free transition to the resort. Ask me how we can get this added to your hotel package!
  • Car Rentals & Parking: Renting a car gives you maximum flexibility to explore Oahu at your own pace. Keep in mind that Aulani charges daily self-parking and valet fees for resort guests.

Pro Tip for Canadian Drivers: Standard Canadian driver’s licenses are fully valid in Hawaii. If you plan to do a split stay or spend days exploring the North Shore or Windward Coast, pick up your rental right at HNL Airport. It is important to check with your insurance company to see what kind of coverage you have for your stay and if it is sufficient.

On-Site Accommodations: Studios, Villas & Saving on Meals

For stays longer than 3 or 4 nights, room layout makes a massive difference in your vacation budget and comfort. We always make sure to stay in at least a deluxe studio or villa to have the ability to make snacks, breakfast or lunch for our family. When the kids were babies or toddlers, this allowed them to grab a little snack before nap time or to enjoy poolside.

  • Standard Hotel Rooms: Small refrigerator and coffee maker. Best for shorter stays, small families and dining out.
  • Deluxe Studios: Kitchenette with small refrigerator, coffee maker and microwave. A flexible option for preparing snacks and light meals.
  • 1- & 2-Bedroom Villas: Full kitchen, washer/dryer and separate living space. Best for longer stays (4+ nights), multi-generational groups and saving on food.

Smart Grocery Savings at Costco

Dining out for every meal in Hawaii adds up quickly, especially with the USD/CAD currency exchange. Located just a 10-minute drive from Aulani in Kapolei is a full-sized Costco Wholesale. Walmart was another great option too. If you have a car rental, make sure to grab your gas at Costco!

Stocking up on breakfast staples, snacks, fresh fruit, drinks, and easy lunch items cut our food budget significantly during our two-week stays. Having a kitchen or studio kitchenette allows you to enjoy peaceful breakfasts on your balcony (lanai) before heading to the pools.

What’s Right Nearby: Walking Distance Essentials

While Aulani is its own paradise, you aren't isolated. Directly across the street at the Ko Olina Center, you’ll find convenience within a 5-minute walk:

  • Island Country Markets (by ABC Stores): Perfect for hot breakfasts, made-to-order deli sandwiches, snacks, souvenirs, beach gear, and groceries.
  • Monkeypod Kitchen by Merriman: A must-visit dining spot right across the street, famous for its scratch-made farm-to-table dishes, fresh seafood, and iconic cream-topped Mai Tais. Do not forget to order their famous banana cream pie!
  • Ko Olina Lagoons: Aulani sits on Lagoon 1, offering calm, ocean-fed waters protected by rock barriers, ideal for babies, toddlers, and guests needing gentle water conditions. The kids love spending time at the beach and they offer complimentary sand toys, boogie boards, life jackets, chairs & umbrellas during your stay. All equipment is subject to availability.

Multi-Generational Travel & Accessibility

Disney is renowned for inclusion, and Aulani showcases this commitment at every turn. Having experienced the resort with an infant, extended family, and a legally blind daughter, Aulani stands out for multi-generational and accessible travel:

  • Seamless Physical Accessibility: Zero-entry pools, accessible beach pathways, ramp access throughout the grounds, and clear signage make navigating the resort effortless for strollers, wheelchairs, and guests with visual impairments.
  • Inclusive Character Interactions: Disney Characters (Moana, Mickey, Minnie, Stitch, Olu Mel) take their time with every guest. Cast Members are trained to assist visually impaired or sensory-sensitive guests, ensuring every interaction feels personalized, tactile, and warm.
  • Something for Every Generation: While grandparents relax by the family-friendly infinity pool at Ka Maka Grotto or enjoy the Laniwai Spa, potty-trained kids (ages 4 to 12) can play at Aunty’s Beach House, and families can reunite for evening storytelling at the fire pit (do NOT miss it).

Resort Highlights: Pools, Dining & Entertainment

To fully soak in the resort without feeling rushed, plan to stay at least 4 to 5 nights.

  • Waikolohe Valley Water Area: Features a 900-foot lazy river, zero-entry pools, an interactive splash zone for children under 48 inches tall (Menehune Bridge), and thrill slides.
  • On-Site Dining & Character Meals: Enjoy regional Hawaiian cuisine at ʻAMAʻAMA (fine dining overlooking the ocean, great for anniversaries or celebrations) or book a Character Breakfast at Makahiki.
  • Authentic Storytelling & Luau: Aulani’s KA WAʻA Luau offers traditional Hawaiian music, hula, and dining right on the resort grounds.
  • Plus lots of wonderful daily activities (my kids still remember feeding the fish and stargazing) that are offered.

Oahu Sightseeing & Split-Stay Recommendations

If your family wants to experience both the peaceful seclusion of Ko Olina and the high energy of Waikiki, consider a Split Stay:

  1. First Leg (Waikiki / Honolulu): Stay 2–3 nights closer to Honolulu to hike Diamond Head, visit Pearl Harbor, explore the beach, and experience the shopping and dining of Waikiki.
  2. Second Leg (Aulani in Ko Olina): Finish your trip with 4–5+ nights at Aulani. Ending your vacation in Ko Olina allows you to relax completely before flying home.

Note: You can easily visit Pearl Harbor or the North Shore using Aulani as your home base with a rental car, as the resort connects directly to major Oahu highways and the drive is absolutely beautiful.

From taking our son on his very first trip at 11 months old, to watching my parents celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on the island years later, Aulani has become the backdrop to our family’s core memories. It is more than just a resort; it is a place where every generation feels welcomed, cared for, and truly celebrated. Our countdown to return is already on.

Until next time, Aloha!
